Nothing says “Christmas” like a group of people gathered around a beautifully decorated tree. It’s easy to fall into a rut and use the same boring Christmas decorations year after year, but this year try branching out and using something a little more original.
That’s where your own handcrafted ornaments for the holiday tree come in handy! Making your own ornaments is not only a fun way to exercise your imagination (you may use them to display some of your mother’s treasured vintage items, for example), but it’s also a simple way to spread festive cheer throughout your home.
This inexpensive collection of Christmas craft ideas, from cute Santa hats to intricate angel designs, is sure to please crafters of all skill levels. Even better, many of these decorations may be constructed by simply reusing items you already have around the house, like yarn, pine needles, or twine, to match your store-bought pieces. Infinite variety awaits you! Whether you have a real tree or fake ones, these ornaments will add a special touch to your holiday decor.
Fringe Ornaments
Use fringe ribbons of varying colors and textures, together with ornaments of all lengths and widths, to show off your imaginative side. Start at the bottom and work your way up the glass ornament as you hot glue your chosen ribbon (between half an inch and an inch in width). Rings of ribbon should be glued about 1/2 inch above the preceding ring for the ribbon to overlap. Just snip off the excess tinsel at the end and you’ll have the ideal fringe. If you think you could miss some of the surface area when applying the tinsel, paint your ornament the color of the tinsel first.
Tree Decorations Made with Marbled Nail Polish
Miniature trees made of wood and painted in different shades of green nail polish are needed for this craft, as are little eye screw in hooks and ribbon for the loop ornament. You can try out two different polishes by drizzling them into a cup of ice water. Turn your wooden tree upside down over a towel after dipping it in the solution, and hold it there until the drips cease. Once it’s clean, stand it up to dry.
Ornaments Cut From Three Dimensional Paper
Use different layers of colorful cardstock and fun decorations to make it three-dimensional.
Using a ruler and a craft knife, cut five strips of paper to the following dimensions: two 1.25 inches by 10 inches, two 1.25 inches by 7 inches, and one 1.25 inches by 5 inches. Then, about 1/4″ from both ends of each strip, punch a hole. To stack the papers, start with the smallest and place it in the centre, followed by the medium strips and finally the huge strips. Gather all the strips together at one end, and then thread a length of string or wire through the holes and secure it with a knot. To fan out the strips, repeat the process on the opposite end. To make the decoration even more eye-catching, string beads or tassels along its base.
Decorated with a Brush Stroke
Traditional Christmas ornaments made of plastic or glass can be made more interesting by including unexpected elements. To begin, take off the ornament’s top so you may paint the bottom with acrylic or spray paint. The next step is to make abstract patterns with paint brushes of varying sizes and colors. Re-screw the cap back on and finish off with a bow.
Decorated Sticks
You can make this with the kids, and it will look fantastic in your home because it was inspired by nature. Grab some sticks, some glue, and some embroidery thread, and you can build all kinds of amazing patterns and shapes (like trees or stars!).
